Mogilev region
The Mogilev region is in the Eastern part of Belarus and borders with Russia. The center of the region is the city of Mogilev (371,000 people).
The region has a glorious history. The cities of Mogilev, Krichev, Mstislavl are known from the 12–13th cents. Like the whole Belarus the Mogilev land was many times the arena of fierce battles and only monuments remind us now about that times. Near the village Lesnaya there is a memorial complex commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Russian Army's Victory over Swedes — a chapel and a museum.
The memorial of the Buynich Field keeps the memory about the heroes of World War II: here in July in 1941 heroic defense was held by the soldiers of the 388th infantry division. According to the will of the famous writer K. Simonov his ashes were scattered over that field. As for the present times the highest interest for a traveler may be the town of Shklov — the birthplace of the first President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
Like Minsk, Mogilev was greatly destroyed during the last war, however some monuments have remained. While touring around the city you can see the archeological monument of the former castle place (16–18th cents.), St. Nicholas monastery, the Cathedral of Three
Sanctifiers, and in the St. Stanislav cathedral you can listen to organ music.
Annually Mogilev becomes the site of two festivals: that of retro-music “Zolotoy shlyager” (in November) and the one of sacred music “Magutny Bozha” (in July–August).
